Les pérégrinations littéraires de João Botelho : de Fernando Pessoa à la comtesse de Ségur (Allers et retours)

Summary:João Botelho is the creator of a singular filmography built upon the dialogue with Literature and its authors, ever since the programmatic and seminal The Other One (Conversa Acabada, 1981), depicting the connection between Fernando Pessoa and Mário de Sá-Carneiro, to Um Filme em Forma de Assim (2022), a feature film about Alexandre O’Neill. 2025 should see the premiere of As Meninas Exemplares, adaptation of Sophie’s Misfortunes, by the Countess of Ségur. Bold and masterful, the film-maker has adapted literary classics such as in O Fatalista (2005), from Diderot’s Jacques the Fatalist, The Maias. Scenes from Romantic life (Os Maias. Cenas da vida romântica, 2014), from the novel by Eça de Queirós, or Peregrinação (2017), based on the works by Fernão Mendes Pinto and Deana Barroqueiro. In its first part, the paper analyzes João Botelho’s revisitation of some French Literature classics, an act that combines homage and parody. The second part revisits Botelho’s main pilgrimages to the Portuguese Literature. In its third and final part, the paper offers a reading of the three feature films dedicated to Fernando Pessoa’s universe, namely The Other One, Disquiet (Filme do Desassossego, 2010) and The year of the death of Ricardo Reis (O ano da morte de Ricardo Reis, 2020).
