Bibliographic Details
Summary:As a professional of Information and Documentation, I have acquired knowledge on this area and it became evident to us the inexistence of a thesauri in the Nursing area, which justifies the development of this research. To develop this work, it was necessary to perform an extensive bibliographic review on the scope of the representation and retrieval of information, having been also addressed the issue of documentary languages, and giving special emphasis on the construction of a Thesauri. The Micro-thesauri presented in this work was based in the analysis of a prestigious publication in the Nursing area, named “Nursing”. It is a monthly magazine for nurses, which covers all areas of knowledge related to Nursing. From the examination of this document 139 keywords were identified and proposed as descriptors in the Thesauri. It was also developed an exhaustive survey of 23 national and international thesaurus related to existing areas. The quantification and qualification of the terms that constitute this Micro-thesaurus was performed with the help of teachers from UATLA, experts in the field of Health in general and in the Nursing area in particular. The Micro-thesauri in the Nursing area includes all descriptors and non descriptors, as well as their equivalence, hierarchical and associative relations. It was built in Portuguese, English and Spanish, the languages with the highest use in the UATLA library, where this instrument is applied, which in turn favors their representation and improves its accessibility. For a better understanding of the Thesauri, it is presented a framework were is possible to see the distribution of the terms concerned to the thematic areas, the descriptors and nondescriptors which are organized in classes, correspond to 10 knowledge areas that are related to Nursing. Despite the construction and development of a documentary instrument of this kind is usually performed by a multidisciplinary team work, formed by professionals and experts in the concerned area, this work is the result of an individual effort. The software used in the nursing Micro-thesaurus construction was DocBase. This system gives more agility to the structuring of this documentary tool. Because of its size, the Micro-thesauri is presented at the end of this work as appendix. This formatting does not remove the importance of this tool and allows its utilization regardless of the research work. This work also intends to be a contribution to all Libraries and Documentation Centers specialized on this specific area, by filling a gap in the knowledge area.
