A Prática e a Vivência Drag Queen em Portugal: Um Estudo Exploratório
| Resumo: | The drag queen phenomenon has been the subject of some research in the United States of America. However, literature on this topic in Portugal is scarce, which does not allow for a deep understanding of this reality. In this regard, this qualitative exploratory study aimed to explore the experiences of the transformation process, understand the meanings attributed to performances, and grasp the challenges and complexities of this artistic practice. Twelve semi-structured interviews were conducted with drag performers, including a transgender woman who participates in this context. This decision was based on information highlighted in the literature and references made by some interviewees regarding the potential of drag practice in the transgender identification process. Data were analyzed using thematic content analysis, resulting in four themes: "Artistic Characterization," "Barriers," "Meaning Attributed to Experiences," and "Relationship with the LGBTQI+ Community." These themes revolved around a central concept of "Being, Doing, and Being a Drag Queen," encompassing different facets of an activity that participants define as art, distancing themselves from gender identity issues and giving artistic femininity a multifaceted meaning and an opportunity for self-realization. It was concluded that the actors face various socio-economic and sociocultural difficulties, and some of the identified social phenomena appear to affect the older age group. It also became evident that there is a complex relationship between drag queens, primarily gay men, and a segment of the LGBTQI+ community. Therefore, the relevance of conducting work to clarify the circumstances underlying this ambivalence and define the specific contexts in which this phenomenon occurs is discussed. |
