Fatores de adesão e permanência à prática em programa de exercícios físicos entre pessoas idosas do norte de Portugal
| Summary: | The regular and guided practice of physical exercise (PE) is directly linked to improving the quality of life in all stages of life (ACSM, 2009). PE programs have been recommended to the elderly population in order to prevent the decline in functionality, health and quality of life (Capodaglio et al., 2007), being a public health concern (Paterson & Warburton, 2010). However, these benefits are dependent on the regularity and attendance of these programs, and there are still many barriers to PE practice to overcome. In this sense, the present study aimed to investigate the main factors of adherence and permanence of elderly people in the community physical exercise program "More active, more lived" ("Mais Ativos, Mais Vividos"). The qualitative study conducted semi-structured interviews with 17 participants (mean age = 75.65±5.49 years). The interviewed participants had been attending the program for at least 2 to a maximum of 13 years. The interviews were transcribed, and an inductive thematic analysis was carried out (Willig, 2013), with respect to adherence to the program the following themes emerged: the enjoying and pleasure for PE and sport practice; the search for social interaction; search for health stimuli, and become more active; maintain autonomy desire. With regard to permanence: social interaction; enjoying and pleasure for PE and sport; and the feeling of belonging to the program; confidence in PE leadership and encouragement from teachers. Through the present study, it was possible to point out that elderly people adhere to the practice in the "MAMV" project mainly by the peer's suggestion, and remain motivated by social interaction, in addition to the health benefits, related to the achievement of greater functional and social independence. Furthermore, the practice of physical exercise and group-based activities stimulates expressions of feelings related to "belonging" and pride, which the participants reported in being part of the "MAMV" Project. Thus, it became evident that, for the elderly, feeling embraced and respected by others denotes feelings of pride and self-esteem, which, in turn, reinforce their involvement and adherence to practice. |
