Bibliographic Details
Summary:This study aims to identify the biggest waste in the production process of the Portuguese printing industry, more specifically in the sector of offset printing. This theme is particularly relevant in a context of economic recession, when companies find themselves forced to improve their productivity and reduce costs in order to maintain competitiveness. We intend to demonstrate that there are many ways to reduce costs without needing of large investments. It requires, however, full involvement of top management in the enterprise of a change that is not easy or straight ahead. However, it is possible to achieve significant improvements in productivity and increases betting on a work team, making it an integral part of business success. This study aims to identify waste in existing working methods and present some tools for their elimination. The analysis of working methods is performed by applying a survey to the Portuguese printing industry with offset printing. Questionnaires were sent to 630 companies. The response rate was about 17%, which means, 106 questionnaires were received. The analysis concluded that most companies reporting features all types of waste identified in this study: (1) Overproduction, (2) Inventory, (3) Transportation, (4) Motion, (5) Overprocessing, (6) Waiting, (7) Defects, (8) Underutilized resources and (9) Ignorance of the current state. It was found that the number of printing companies in Portugal working under lean principles is still very low (about 17%). Of the 24 outbreaks of waste identified in the questionnaire, only 3 are not found in most companies, which means that there is excess "fat" in the production process waiting to be eliminated.
