A condição física nos corpos de bombeiros. Fator determinante da eficácia no combate aos incêndios florestais.

Bibliographic Details
Summary:This study, in the area of emergency protection and support, is centred on physical condition as a determining factor in both the effective performance and the safety of fire fighters engaged in combating forest fires in Portugal. The objectives of this research are the measurement of physical parameters of fire fighters combating forest fires and the evaluation of their general physical response to combating forest fires aimed at suggesting a structure to maintain and/or to improve the physical condition of the fire fighters bodies portuguese’s. This study begins with analysis two independent samples: sample 1 involved public and voluntary fire fighters (n = 25), sample 2 involved special fire fighters unit (n = 14). The parameters measured and evaluated were gender, age, weight, height, body mass index, percentage fat, value and classification of physical tests and VO2max. The second stage of this research used a non probabilistic sample using a rational selection based on the results of physical condition measured in all those and constituting four work groups, each one having eight fire fighters for field research. The results demonstrated that there are different levels of physical condition of fire fighters in respect to health and security measures defined in the area of physical body composition and body capacity for this activity. Based on the results a national coordination structure is suggested that can facilitate the introduction of a physical evaluation plan to be applied to all fire fighters.
