Summary:Thesis abstract: The prevalence of obesity throughout pediatric age and its related comorbidity are increasing in epidemic proportions. Based on these grounds, the central aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of overweight and obesity within a sample consisting of preschool children and to relate overweight to other variables related to children and family. To define overweight and obesity regarding sex and age, we used the criteria recommended by the International Task Force (IOTF), by Cole et al. Anthropometric assessment (weight and height) was applied to children aged between 3 and 6. Addtionally, two questionnaires were sent to parents so that data on the variables concerning the child and the family could be gathered and analysed. The results showed that 20,6% of the 408 interviewed children run the risk of being overweight and 7,8% are at risk of becoming obese. Out of the 84 children who were at risk of being overweight, 32,1% were males and 67,9% were females, this being a statistically relevant difference. Throughout research, we were able to find statistical relevance in the relationship between risk of overweight and the following variables: birth weight, sedentary activities such as watching TV, sleep duration, the father`s school education and socioeconomic status, the mother`s BMI, physical activity (such as walking to the bus stop), working in the fields, and swimming.(...)
