Eu, Tu, Nós e a Psicopatologia: um estudo qualitativo

Bibliographic Details
Summary:The relationship between conjugality and psychopathology has significant implications both for the mental health of individuals and for the stability and sustainability of romantic relationships. Considering the scarce Portuguese research on this topic, we seek to analyze and understand the impact of a spouse's psychopathology, on the romantic dyad, and on each element individually. Furthermore, we sought to investigate the undiagnosed spouse's perception of the impact of psychopathology on the affected partner, understand how the romantic relationship influences the experience of psychopathology, and describe the protective factors of romantic dyads. To this end, a qualitative methodology was adopted by conducting interviews with both members of the couple, separately. The results show that the impact of psychopathology on the romantic relationship was essentially highlighted by the spouses with the diagnosis, reporting impairments in communication and sexuality. However, for them, social life was the most affected area, while their partners highlighted greater health impairment. Participants are satisfied with the relationship, which they consider to be intimate, and highlight its importance in coping with psychopathology. Communication, transparency, lack of judgment from the partner and common future goals were highlighted as factors in maintaining the relationship. Finally, despite the disparity in psychopathologies, the impact on the relationship and on the spouses is similar. However, each couple faces psychopathology in an idiosyncratic way. Therefore, it is important to carry out longitudinal studies including both members of the dyad, to understand the evolution of marital dynamics and the impacts of psychopathology. Developing adapted intervention strategies that promote well-being.
