| Summary: | Playground is a privileged context in which children are able to explore, to manipulate and recreate available toys and materials. Outdoor activities are also known for their potentiate effect on children interactions, making them happier, more creative and, above all, a healthy development. This research focuses on children´s play outside. We collected videos (images and sound) of a group of 17 children two years old playing. These videos were recorded in a private nursery in Lisbon, over 5 consecutive days, along 150 minutes. Behaviors were then analised according a checklist of communicative behaviours during interactions. This checklist was specifically created for this study. We found that most children of this group prefered to watch other children playing, some preferred to play alone, other prefered to play in small groups. Facial expressions are a very frequent nonverbal behaviour and are used to express emotions (joy, displeasure, etc) We conclude that Free Play is a privileged context to promote favorable conditions for communication and contributes to children´s learning and development process. |
