O papel de integração económica e normas sociais no preconceito subtil: o caso da imigração brasileira em Portugal

Bibliographic Details
Summary:Subtle prejudice tends to be justified by plausible reasons not linked to gender, race or nationality. One such justification is the belief that people get what they deserve, central to the definition of meritocracy, ultimately legitimizing prejudice. Conversely, the norm of equality and humanitarianism may be responsible for reducing prejudice and racism. Currently, the predominant immigrant group in Portuguese society is Brazilian, the aim of the present study (N = 248) was to analyze the effect of norm salience (merit or equality), as well as the effect of the job applicant's nationality and experience (Portuguese, Brazilian with professional and academic experience in Brazil or Brazilian with professional and academic experience in Portugal) on the expression of prejudice vs. inclusive attitudes, and the decision to accept these applicants for a teaching job in Portugal. The results suggest that participants overall discriminate more against Brazilian candidates with experience in Brazil, and that the equality norm may mitigate discrimination as well as lead to greater acceptance in hiring Brazilians. Social and theoretical implications are discussed.
