Cultura organizacional e liderança num agrupamento de escolas: Estudo de caso sobre as representações de professores

Bibliographic Details
Summary:The relationship between organizational culture and leadership has attracted considerable attention and some studies have pointed out the interdependence between both constructs. Although embedded in a cultural context rather broader, school organizations are producers of an internal culture of their own, that gives them identity and by expressing the values and beliefs that organization members share, making them unique. The essence of leadership is the leader's ability to realize the limitations of its own culture and adapt that culture to change. In an organizational culture constantly subjected to change, leadership has an important role to play in creating the conditions for the motivation of the followers and to create conditions for the development of school organization. The formation of vertical groups of schools constitutes a process of transformation of the organizational culture in which the action of leadership becomes even more important. This study aims to investigate the organizational functioning of a group of schools, to identify and characterize the representations of teachers on the role of the Principal, and in the creation and consolidation of an organizational culture based upon symbolic patterns shared by teachers. The research is guided by the objective of contributing to meet the teachers' representations, regarding the leadership style and the type of dominant culture in the Group of Schools. Another aspect which is guided by the research is to understand the teachers' representations about the processes that underlie the construction of the organizational culture. The empirical study is presented in the form of a case study, and has opted for a research, essentially, qualitative. The author conducted a content analysis of group interview (focus group), semi-structured, with the participation of several faculty coordinators, as well as statistical analysis of the results of questionnaires given to teachers, to cover a wider range of diversity and perspectives on the topic under study. The theoretical framework on the issue under study focused on reflections of organizational culture and leadership. It is hoped that the findings may somehow contribute to the understanding of the processes of the construction of organizational culture in a group of schools and the role that leadership plays in this creation.
