| Resumo: | Dissertation abstract: Introduction: The PKU is an inborn error of amino acid metabolism that results in severe mental retardation if not treated early and appropriately. The traditional treatment consists of a low-phenylalanine diet. The dietary restrictions are difficult to follow and the patients tend to relax the diet in adolescence and beginning of adult life. The quality of life is a multidimensional concept that has been used to evaluated patients with PKU. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the implications that the Quality of dietary Control may have in the Quality of Life of early diagnosed and treated adult PKU individuals. Material and Methods: This study involved 32 PKU patients who answered two questionnaires - one about Quality of Life and the other about Socialisation. The connections between these two questionnaires, and the Quality of Dietary Control and the level of global intellectual development were evaluated in this study. A socio-demographic characterisation of the sample was conducted in this study. Results: Results show that the individuals with worse dietary control have a higher perception of life, in the item General Domain of WHOQOL-Bref, than the individuals with better dietary control. In the Socialisation Battery BAS-3, the results are in consonance, showing that the individual with worse dietary control suffer less Social Anxiety. Both groups reveal lower medium levels in the Environmental Domain. The group with better dietary control reveals higher levels in the physical domain. The group with worse dietary control reveals higher levels in the Social Relationship. |
