Bibliographic Details
Summary:Schools could and should spread the knowledge and also rules of prevention and protection, through the curricula in all education levels. According to legislation, practice and national educational curricula this should be done for hazard risk reduction. In this sense, in 2011 there was a shift in teaching in Portugal and the school officially became the information production and spreading centre on hazard prevention education. This essay tends to examine the path of law changes regarding to hazard prevention education from 1989 to 2018, as well as the syllabus used in Portugal. It is also intended to assess whether the recommended measures were implemented, regarding the promotion of resilience and self-protection against risk. A survey was conducted with 404 students from two schools in Seixal municipality, who attend the 10th and 12th grade. The study reveals homogeneity of results in relation to the two school years under analysis, shows that students conduct little work on disaster, and the searches are mainly internet centred. The students show a lot of knowledge of self-protection measures applied in simulacrum, which are mostly held in school spaces, focusing on the situation of earthquake or fire in a building. Thus, denoting the important role of the school in the operationalization of self-protection measures through the practice of simulacrum. With regard to the knowledge revealed by the respondents about the risks contained in the emergency plan of the school or the plan of emergency and civil protection of Seixal, the vast majority claims to not know the risks present in both plans. Regarding to the most serious hazards, forest fires are singled out as the most worrisome.
