Modularidade e variação digital: Uma abordagem computacional à arquitetura modular
| Summary: | The subject of modular architecture appears in a time of constant innovation and changes around the globe. Despite not being novel, modular architecture finds itself in a transformation phase with the input of digital technologies, either in design processes or building ones. Additionally, the requirements to comply with challenges demanded by social values, government laws and environment standards add up to the previous work necessary for the good conduct of Architecture. With that, the current dissertation examines the effect of computational processes throughout its incorporation of possibilities of variation in modular building in architecture. Evaluating this opportunity, it is intended to reflect its relevance for design, sustainability and economy of architecture solutions. It is not intended to expose the history related with prefabrication and modular architecture, since [it has already been discussed and] it strays away from the core of the subject presented. Instead, the speech tries to restrain itself only to the twenty-first century. In this way, the thesis initiates by pointing out the current problems and subjects that seems to propose a "new" opportunity for modular architecture. After, the second chapter explores this regarding its semantics, implications and demands accounted not only in Europe but globally. This approach serves as a preliminary point for the analyses of the introduction to the digital in design processes, in which the study of variation becomes essential for customisation employment. The main section develops into the exploration of production and assembly processes, leading to a procedure that envisions systematisation and industrialisation. Next, the third topic reflects the search for these systems by analysing some case studies that address the topics covered. The thesis concludes with a brief summary of the approached topics, followed by two perspectives: a conclusive one about the possibility of generating architecture with the help of the digital; and a critique one regarding this digital era in (Modular) Architecture. |
