Orthodontic treatment and craniocervical posture in patients with temporomandibular disorders: An observational study

    Publicação
Orthodontic treatment acts through the application of forces and/or by stimulating and redirecting the functional forces within the craniofacial complex. Considering the interrelationship between craniomandibular and craniocervical systems, this intervention may alter craniocervical posture. Thus, our aim is to (a) compare craniocervical posture, hyoid bone position, and craniofacial morphology before, after, and also in the contention phase at least one year after the orthodontic treatment, in patients with temporomandibular disorders and (b) to verify whether the presence of condylar displacement, the skeletal class, or the facial biotype interferes with the abovementioned outcomes. To do so an observational, analytical, longitudinal, and retrospective design study was carried out. A non-probabilistic convenience sampling method was applied. The sample consisted of clinical records of patients diagnosed with temporomandibular disorders in order to compare pre-orthodontic treatment with post-orthodontic treatment (n = 42) and contention phase data (n = 26). A cephalometric analysis of several variables was performed. The p-value was set as 0.05. When the pre-and post-orthodontic treatment data were analyzed, there were statistically significant changes in variables concerning craniocervical posture (CV angle, C0-C1, and AA-PNS) and also concerning hyoid bone position (C3-Rgn). When pre-and post-orthodontic treatment and contention phase data were analyzed the variables concerning craniocervical posture (C0-C1, CVT/Ver, NSL/OPT, NSL/CVT, NSL/Ver; OPT/CVT, OPT/Ver) and facial biotype had statistically significant changes. This allowed us to conclude that in the sample studied, there were significant differences regarding hyoid bone position (pre-versus post-orthodontic treatment) and craniocervical posture (pre-versus post-orthodontic versus contention), with the craniocervical posture being prone to return to basal values. The presence of condylar displacement was found to significantly increase the H-H1 distance in the three moments of evaluation. Facial biotype was found to significantly increase the NSL/Ver angle on hypodivergent compared to hyperdivergent in the contention phase.

Relatório de estágio profissionalizante realizado nas equipas de futebol de sénior masculina do Valadares Gaia Futebol Clube e de Sub-17 masculina do Sporting Clube de Espinho, na...

    Publicação
Football is constantly evolving and, therefore, the demands on sports professionals are increasingly higher. The team's individual and collective performance is the result of countless factors, with various associated areas, highlighting the need for a comprehensive and multifaceted coaching team, capable of addressing all the challenges within the context. The internship is the ideal time to apply all the knowledge acquired throughout my academic education, combining theory with practice. It is also an excellent opportunity to learn from outstanding professionals, discussing and debating ideas in favour of a common good. The process of reflection is also an important component of this report, always seeking to question events and the way they are approached, in order to prepare myself for a better response to problems that may arise in the future. The 2023/2024 season was divided between two contexts with completely different specificities. Initially, and with the season already underway, I joined Valadares Gaia Futebol Clube, a team that competes in Campeonato de Portugal, together with the coaching staff I was part of last season, marking my first experience in senior football. Halfway through the season, and after a very troubled period due to bureaucratic issues, the need to find a new club to continue my training programme arose. So I joined the coaching staff of Sporting Clube de Espinho U-17, competing in Campeonato Nacional Sub-17 I Divisão Nacional. This report will cover various football-related topics, as well as a deep dive and critical reflection on both contexts that I experienced during this internship.

Sustainable environmental geotechnics practices for a green economy

    Publicação
The revitalisation of the global economy after the Covid-19 era presents environmental geotechnics with the opportunity to reinforce the need for a change in paradigm towards a green, circular economy and to promote aggressively the use and development of sustainable technologies and management practices. This paper aims to assist in this effort by concentrating on several thematic areas where sustainability solutions and future improvements are sought. These include the re-entry of construction and demolition of wastes, excavated materials, industrial wastes and marine sediments into the production cycle and the reuse of existing foundations. Despite the recent trend in advanced countries towards recycling and waste-to-energy thermal treatment, landfills still constitute the most common municipal solid waste management practice, especially in low-and-middle-income countries, and technological solutions to improve their environmental footprint are hereby presented. At the same time, remediation solutions are required to address the multitude of contaminated sites worldwide. Advanced developments that incorporate environmental, economic and social dimensions are expounded by the authors, together with sustainable ground improvement solutions for infrastructure projects conducted in soft and weak soils. The topic of thermo-active geostructures concludes this paper, where, apart from their infrastructure utility, these structures have the potential to contribute to the renewable energy source.

Estilhaços do Espelho: o Jornal Arquitectos (1981-2015) como território da construção do arquitecto

    Publicação
This dissertation explores the condition of the architect as a "being" in project and how his construction can be produced in relation with an "other" reflected in the printed pages of Jornal Arquitectos (JA). The suspicion cast by Beatriz Colomina that Le Corbusier's "architectural self" was only possible through the printed media, opens the way for the hypothesis that this is a territory, but certainly not the only one, where, under ideal circumstances, any architect can build his "self" and become a "Subject". In this sense, the JA, due to the particular place it occupies among specialized periodicals in Portugal because of its longevity, number, capacity for its renewal and specific audience, proves to be not only a sensitive witness to variations of those constitutive processes but also an active agent in its production. Here, it is analysed as a "mirror" (Jacques Lacan) in which authors and readers can identify themselves with the image reflected in their pages in order to form their "self"; as an "apparatus" (Michel Foucault) that manages the relations of force and power that control disciplinary knowledge and discursive practices that transform the individual into a "Subject"; and where architects "perform" (Judith Butler) through a sustained set of significant acts that promote their constitution. These are the conceptual tools that helped the full reading of all articles and projects published by JA until the number 252, seeking to identify, in each series, which images of the architect they produce, how they are represented and what are their supposed constitutive imperatives. In parallel, the categorization of the published elements and their organization in diagrams clarify the reasons for these interpretations, allowing, in the same way, to dismantle certain "myths" that deformed, in a "natural" and unified image, what is an architect in post-modernity, necessarily unfinished, fragmented and plural. The author's name is a possibility for the longed-for, but temporary, stability, as well as the body produced as a manifestation of a discourse that gives it its material consistency and a meaning, also temporary and contingent. The existence of an "I-architect" created from the fundamental matrix shaped by different lines of force from the published authors, conceiving an image of a kind of "ideal-I" sufficiently stable for the identification process to occur, and the "Subject-architect" as a result of power relations, through a discourse and regulatory schemes conditioned by the cultural context in which it is inserted, or which has as a referent, and realized through performative action, are hypotheses that explain the construction of the architect.

Instabilities in micro-contraction flows of semi-dilute CTAB and CPyCl solutions: rheology and flow instabilities

    Publicação
The flows of two semi-dilute surfactant solutions (CTAB and CPyCl) through several micro contractions/expansions are experimentally investigated, following an extensive rheological characterization in both shear and extensional flows. The shear rheology of the solutions shows strong shear thinning and shear banding, whereas Small Amplitude Oscillatory Shear and Capillary Break-up Extensional Rheometry indicate that they have high shear and extensional elasticities. Flow visualizations and micro-particle image velocimetry measurements show that the surfactant solutions exhibit three established types of flow patterns in contraction flows: Newtonian-like, asymmetric and disordered. Newtonian-like flow occurs at low flow rates and is preceded by a long transient flow in experiments starting from rest, which seems to be related to shear banding and the alignment of wormlike micelles. The asymmetric flow regime occurs at moderate flow rates and is characterized by an asymmetric upstream central jet with two adjacent vortices, features that change non-periodically, but slowly, in time. This flow pattern seems to be related with the high elasticity of the semi-dilute solutions. The disordered flow pattern is similar to the asymmetric flow in terms of broad characteristics, but the flow asymmetry changes with time much faster than in the asymmetric flow regime, resembling a chaotic-like flow. The disordered flow seems to be related with the breakdown of micellar structures. We concluded also that the flows in both the asymmetric and disordered flow regimes are globally stable in terms of flow patterns, but locally unstable in terms of flow characteristics, with power spectra of the velocity fluctuations having slopes that differ from those typically encountered in elastic turbulence.
