Parameters affecting 5-hydroxymethylfurfural exposure from beer

    Publicação
5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is generated during food and beverage heating processes and/or storage. Its daily intake, estimated as 4-10mgday(-1), is several orders of magnitude higher than other process contaminants. Beer can be of relevance to the evaluation of HMF exposure; however, the information concerning its occurrence in different types of beer and during product storage is scarce. Therefore, the major goal of this work was to assess the amounts of HMF in different commercial beers, as well as the impact of storage, to deepen knowledge about the contribution of beer to HMF exposure. Blonde beers presented a mean content of 4.29 +/- 1.05mgL(-1), which was significantly lower (P0.05) than those obtained for amber (6.84 +/- 0.75mgL(-1)) and dark beers (6.99 +/- 0.52mgL(-1)). Additionally, to study kinetic of HMF formation, fresh pilsner beers were stored at 30, 40 and 50 degrees C during 40days; a zero-order reaction was observed. The dependence of the rate constant on temperature was described by the Arrhenius equation and calculated activation energy was 101.85kJmol(-1). Storage can increase drastically HMF content, which means higher exposure for consumers. Thus, beer contribution to HMF exposure should not be neglected, since the intake of 1L of beer entails a consumption of 4-7mg of HMF or even more, depending on storage time and temperature.

Uma filosofia para a Faculdade de Letras

    Publicação
This text aims at articulating some ideas concerning the present state and the perspectives for the future of literary studies, and, in general, of humanistic studies within the university. Considering there is a hegemonic framework in the evaluation of human actions and artefacts whereby the old cognitive, ethical and aesthetical standards have been replaced by criteria of efficacy (as input-output ratio), it is argued that there might be a future for literary studies in a relocation of human meanings and values – truth, good, beauty – at the now empty centre of human creativity and its results.

Ferramenta para Text Mining em Textos completos

    Publicação
We live in a world in constant change where more and more people have unlimited access to the internet, where they can post their ideas. This means that there more and more texts available on the Web. These texts can be simple facebook posts or papers about various areas. With a large amount of texts, new techniques are needed to read and classify them quickly and effectively. Text Mining (TM) comes up to solve these problems. With this powerful tool it is possible to interpret and classify a huge amount of texts, in order to obtain useful information. Current TM approaches do not take advantage of structure of the texts. A text is seen as a bag of words, a set of unrelated words. This causes the TM algorithms become computationally heavy and their quality of information obtained can be substantially improved. There are different approaches of TM and several steps of preprocessing that can be applied to full text classification, but which methods that can get better results? Which steps must be applied so the final result is more complete? These are some questions that we address in this thesis.

Introducing Flexibility in Urea-Formaldehyde Resins: Copolymerization with Polyetheramines

    Publicação
Adhesives obtained by copolymerizing urea, formaldehyde, and difunctional polyetheramine with different molecular weights (230, 600, 900, and 2000 gmol(-1)) are presented as a more resilient alternative to conventional urea-formaldehyde resins. Urea and polyetheramine contents were varied and the resulting resins characterized by FTIR, C-13-NMR, and TGA. These resins were used for production of agglomerated cork panels, an application that demands that the binder system is flexible. Polyetheramine with molecular weight 900 g mol(-1) yielded the most promising agglomerated cork panel, with remarkable flexibility, good tensile strength, and with the E1 formaldehyde content specification for wood-based panels used in construction, according to European Standard EN 12460-5. These new thermoset adhesives have demonstrated to be capable of being used in systems where conventional formaldehyde-based resins do not perform well due to inherent high rigidity. Experimental cyclic tests and retrofit of RC hollow piers

    Publicação
The main purpose of this paper is to present an experimental campaign of reinforced concrete hollow section piers with different cross sections under cyclic loading, comparing the obtained results with those obtained for the same piers after seismic retrofitting, and evaluating benefits concerning their structural behaviour. The setup of the RC pier experimental tests was designed to carry out cyclic horizontal top displacements with axial load using two orthogonal actuators with a sliding device to allow pier top displacements and rotations, in spite of the vertical actuator being fixed to a steel portal frame. Representative of typical bridge construction, square and rectangular hollow section RC piers were tested at LESE the Laboratory of Earthquake and Structural Engineering at Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto. The structural behaviour and safety improvement of these piers are presented, with the retrofit techniques adopted, as well as the illustration of the external and internal damage pattern. The framework of this study is, therefore, to develop and calibrate procedures enabling the evaluation of the different retrofit solution efficiency, their possibilities and fields of application.

Sobrecarga do cuidador informal em cuidados paliativos

    Publicação
The combination of an ageing population and an increasing prevalence of advanced, disabling and life-threatening illnesses has a negative effect on the quality of life of patients. Palliative care (PC) plays a pivotal role in the lives of these individuals, providing comprehensive care with the objective of optimising comfort and quality of life while upholding human dignity. Palliative care intervention is based on four fundamental pillars: symptom control, family support, teamwork and communication. Furthermore, the patient's family should be included in the care process and should themselves be the focus of nursing care. Despite the lack of preparation and training typically afforded to carers, they frequently assume the role of primary care providers in situations of advanced and life-threatening illness. Consequently, they are at elevated risk of caregiver burden. It is incumbent upon the healthcare professionals accompanying the patient and family to comprehend their needs, concerns and apprehensions and to furnish the requisite support. The phenomenon of carer's burden can be attributed to a number of adverse changes in the life of the carer, which are a direct consequence of the demands associated with the care of a family member. In recent years, the home care model has emerged as the preferred approach to supporting chronically ill patients, with the objective of enabling patients to remain in the company of their families. It is therefore evident that home palliative care teams play a pivotal role in providing guidance and support to caregivers, thereby enhancing safety and independence in care, which are crucial factors in reducing caregiver burden. This report is the result of a professional placement with a community palliative care support team, undertaken as part of the Master's in Palliative Care. The objective is to delineate the learning process and skill acquisition during the placement, with reference to the topics covered in the first year of the Master's programme. With regard to the research area, given the relevance of carer burden in this context, a scoping review was conducted on this topic. It can be concluded that the issue of caregiver burden in palliative care is a current reality and represents a challenge for healthcare professionals. It is crucial to gain a deeper comprehension and characterization of this phenomenon and its associated factors, with the aim of enabling early intervention in its prevention or control. This will help to minimise its impact on the lives of both the caregiver and the patient. The completion of this professional internship enabled the master's student to become aware of several important issues in the context of home care. It also facilitated the acquisition of specific skills in caring for palliative patients, based on the principles of palliative care.

Degradation and removal methods of antibiotics from aqueous matrices - A review

    Publicação
Over the past few years, antibiotics have been considered emerging pollutants due to their continuous input and persistence in the aquatic ecosystem even at low concentrations. They have been detected worldwide in environmental matrices, indicating their ineffective removal from water and wastewater using conventional treatment methods. To prevent this contamination, several processes to degrade/remove antibiotics have been studied. This review addresses the current state of knowledge concerning the input sources, occurrence and mainly the degradation and removal processes applied to a specific class of micropollutants, the antibiotics. In this paper, different remediation techniques were evaluated and compared, such as conventional techniques (biological processes, filtration, coagulation, flocculation and sedimentation), advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), adsorption, membrane processes and combined methods. In this study, it was found that ozonation, Fenton/photo-Fenton and semiconductor photocatalysis were the most tested methodologies. Combined processes seem to be the best solution for the treatment of effluents containing antibiotics, especially those using renewable energy and by-products materials.
