Outbreaks of abortions by Coxiella burnetii in small ruminant flocks and a longitudinal serological approach on archived bulk tank milk suggest Q fever emergence in Central Portuga...

    Publicação
Q fever is a worldwide zoonotic infectious disease caused by Coxiella burnetii and sheep and goats are known to be the main reservoir for human infection. This study describes the epidemiological and laboratory findings of C.burnetii outbreaks affecting sheep and goat flocks and also provides the results of a prospective serosurvey in bulk tank milk samples to assess C.burnetii circulation in a population of sheep living in close contact to the human population in Central Portugal. In the epizooties, C.burnetii was identified in tissues of the resulting abortions by qPCR. As for the serological survey, 10.2% (95%CI: 4.5-19.2) of the 78 bulk tank milk samples collected in 2015 presented IgG antibodies against C.burnetii. The same farms were visited and sampled in 2016 and 25.6% (95%CI: 16.4-36.8) were positive. This steep increase in the number of anti-C.burnetii farms between the 2015 and 2016 collections showed to be statistically significant (p=0.020) and is strongly suggestive of Q fever emergence in Central Portugal. Measures on animal health and on disease spread control to the human population should be considered.

Desenvolvimento de competências criativas: um estudo com alunos angolanos do ensino primário

    Publicação
Developing the studentŽs creativity and researching the relationship between creativity and shoolar achievement are actual concerns. Ths study wanted to research the impact of the "Supercreative" Program (Oliveira, 2015) in creative skills, in the classroom creative climate and in the academic achievement (mainly in oral and written expression). Participants were 70 students of 4th year of Angola schooling, corresponding 35 to the experimental group and 35 to the control group. There were pre and post test moments, being evaluated, in both, creativity, through a creative product (a text), the creative climate in classroom, through a scale validated to Portugal (Morais, Viana, Dias, Fleith & Alencar, 2019) and the academic achievement through an average score and the Portuguese language score. Results showed improvements statistically significant in the experimental group in all the variables. These improvements can be a stimulus to the promotion of creativity in the classroom, not only in Angola but also in other countries. Future implications of results are discussed.

Implementação de Acessibilidade Universal ao edificado da Universidade do Porto. Polo III: O caso da FAUP

    Publicação
People with some difference or physical condition tend to experience social discrimination, deprivation of their civic rights and psychological aggression, consequences of their exposure to numerous physical and attitudinal barriers. To recognize the importance and the strategies that architects must adopt to guarantee better access and enjoyment conditions of cities and buildings is in fact a necessity and a responsibility in the exercise of the profession's mission, a contribution to the construction of a more just, balanced and sustainable society. In the first part of this work, we intend to approach the evolution of accessibility over the years, from World War II to the present. It also addresses the worrying population aging, as well as the existence of a high rate of young people with specific needs, making it necessary to debate the awareness of creating more balanced and equitable public spaces, in order to make them stimulators and promoters of independence for all people, regardless of motor or sensory conditions. Still in the first half of this work, we refer the importance of architectural heritage in the evolution of society and in the contribution to the development of the first accessibility models, highlighting the work developed by leading architects, such as: Vitrúvio, Le Corbusier, Ernst Neufert, among others. The second part of this investigation consists of capturing important data and information for the understanding of Accessibility in Europe and Portugal and of the evolution of the legislation that protects the rights of people with disabilities, which is the basis for the approval of the most recent law, currently in force. It also gathers essential information for the analysis of accessibility and mobility in the access to university education, with a specific focus on the building stock of the University of Porto, namely on the premises of the Faculty of Architecture. The main objective of this study is the identification, inventory and proposal to mitigate the architectural barriers present in the study subject, in order to provide reasonable accessibility to its users, from students and researchers to visitors. The research is also carried out with its own on-site investigation, using photographic reporting as one of the main methods for the inventory of barriers, resulting in their identification and mitigation, as well as the applicability of accessible routes and viability schemes for its implementation.

The Influence of Gender on Individuals' Ability to Predict Their Own Risk Tolerance: Evidence from a European Country

    Publicação
The literature on individuals' ability to predict their own level of risk tolerance is scarce and presents divergent results. Utilizing both differential prediction models and logit models on a sample of 391 individuals in Portugal, this study demonstrates that respondents' gender play a crucial role in this predictive ability. Men tend to overestimate their level of risk tolerance, while women tend to believe they are less risk-tolerant than they actually are. Furthermore, the results reveal that men's ability to correctly predict their level of risk tolerance is significantly higher. Being a man implies a 20% higher probability of being consistent in this prediction compared to being a woman, even after controlling for a set of sociodemographic factors. The finding of a systematic inconsistency between measures of subjective and objective risk tolerance suggests that the choice between the two measures of risk propensity is not indifferent. Our findings have relevant implications in the fields of corporate finance, financial investment, and various other spheres of economic life.

Estágio em Cuidados Paliativos Oncológicos: Papel do Enfermeiro na Comunicação - Barreiras e Fatores Facilitadores

    Publicação
Communication - one of palliative care's cornerstones - is an essential therapeutic tool that provides to the patient dignity and autonomy to take decisions concerning its own life and its treatment, preserving its self-esteem and contributing to the creation of a therapeutic relationship with healthcare professionals. Communicating the progress of the disease and the impossibility of healing it has been one of the most difficult tasks to healthcare professionals, as a result, several barriers stand between them and the patients, thanks to the challenging emotional aspects faced by everyone involved. There are many facilitating factors to minimize the nefarious effects of the transmission of bad news, but the reaction of each person will always be unique. Although there is no concrete formulas, there are bad news conveying protocols that can serve as a guiding manual. This technical-scientific internship, in the context of the second year of a masters degree in palliative care, happened on the palliative care's services at the portuguese institute of oncology in porto. Its objective was to comprehend what is the role of the nurse in communicating at palliative care, which factors influence communication in palliative care and understanding if the form of conveying bad news has an effect on the course of the disease in the patient. It focuses mainly on communication, namely in the moment of transmiting bad news in palliative care context. The collection of data was made through participated observation methodology at moments where the conveying of bad news was done. Furthermore, the fulfillment of this internship allowed for the acquisition of experience in providing nursing care on palliative care context. As well as enabling the development of specific competences in caring for a person with a severe or incurable disease, at an advanced stage, progressive and terminal, as well as attending the person's caregivers/family in all clinical practical contexts. In order to relieve their suffering, maximizing their well-being, confort and quality of life. Key-words: Palliative Care; Communication; Nurse

Clinical and Forensic Aspects of Pharmacobezoars

    Publicação
Background: Pharmacobezoars are specific types of bezoars formed when medicines, such as tablets, suspensions, and/or drug delivery systems, aggregate and may cause death by occluding airways with tenacious material or by eluting drugs resulting in toxic or lethal blood concentrations. Objective: This work aims to fully review the state-of-the-art regarding pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment and other relevant clinical and forensic features of pharmacobezoars. Results: Patients of a wide range of ages and in both sexes present with signs and symptoms of intoxications or more commonly gastrointestinal obstructions. The exact mechanisms of pharmacobezoar formation are unknown but is likely multifactorial. The diagnosis and treatment depend on the gastrointestinal segment affected and should be personalized to the medication and the underlying factor. A good and complete history, physical examination, image tests, upper endoscopy and surgery through laparotomy of the lower tract are useful for diagnosis and treatment. Conclusion: Pharmacobezoars are rarely seen in clinical and forensic practice. They are related to controlled or immediate-release formulations, liquid or non-digestible substances, in normal or altered digestive motility/anatomy tract, and in overdoses or therapeutic doses, and should be suspected in the presence of risk factors or patients taking drugs which may form pharmacobezoars.

Remote Boundary-Scan Testbench with Extended SFV Commands

    Publicação
This paper proposes an extended set of SVF commands, which were designed to support real-time monitoring of forbidden patterns at selected groups of boundary-scan pins. The complete SVF program is written and run using an integrated low-cost test controller with its own IP address, enabling remote control of the target hardware. An application example is presented, using a simple dual-port boundary-scan board.
