The deadly avalanche of Rigopiano (Itália): evidences of a constructed local scale disaster

    Publicação
In a context of enhancing development, namely using natural resources and amenities to attract investments and create jobs, local interests can undervalue the natural risks. Our work demonstrates how local decisions and private, and political issues can interplay increasing risks and converge in creating a small-scale disaster. On January 18th 2017, an avalanche of size 5 (200,000 m3) buried under 4 meters of snow the Rigopiano Hotel, in the National Park of Gran Sasso and Maiella, in Italy. In this four-star resort, 38 people were blocked inside when the avalanche hit. Two people, who fortuitously escaped the avalanche because they were outside the hotel, contacted the Operational Center for Emergency. Rescue activities started after some hours of misunderstanding about alarm truthfulness. After some days of frantic efforts, carried out 24h/24 by up to 330 people, 9 people were pulled out alive and in good conditions, whereas 29 victims were pulled from wreckage. Our research demonstrates how the coincidence of structural and contingent factors of natural and human origin converged into a disaster. Even though the resort was built on a very hazardous and unsafe location, and the high level of avalanche danger on that day, the loss of lives could have been avoided by timely evacuating the people. The final result is tightly related to weak risk awareness of local authorities, which only saw in the resort a job tank.

"Eu, a Escola e a Educação Física: interações em (re)construção"

    Publicação
This professional internship report shows the process of the author's professional internship. It was carried out in the School Network of Valongo, in an internship core composed of four teacher trainees, including the author and two supervisors: the guidance counselor of FADEUP and the cooperating teacher of the school in question. The structure of this report describes the author's experiences as an 11th and 6th grade teacher trainee during the 2021/2022 school year, as well as the respective thoughts, difficulties, feelings and learning experiences he went through during that school year. All this, in the context of real practice, that is, with real situations or cases related to it. The document is divided into three main sections, besides an introduction and a conclusion. These include the Personal Framework with reference to the trainee teacher and the goals for the school year; the Institutional Framework which includes aspects related to the regional and local context; and the Operational Framework, which covers three areas: Organization and Management of Teaching and Learning, School Participation and Community Relations and Professional Development, where a research study is presented. It is a case study in which the binomial (trainee teacher - student with educational needs) was analyzed to understand the influence of swimming on the development of psychosocial skills and swimming techniques in a young man with autism spectrum disorder and reciprocally the influence of this young man on the practice and feelings of his trainee teacher.

Microbiological quality of ready-to-eat salads: An underestimated vehicle of bacteria and clinically relevant antibiotic resistance genes

    Publicação
The increase demand for fresh vegetables is causing an expansion of the market for minimally processed vegetables along with new recognized food safety problems. To gain further insight on this topic we analyzed the microbiological quality of Portuguese ready-to-eat salads (RTS) and their role in the spread of bacteria carrying acquired antibiotic resistance genes, food products scarcely considered in surveillance studies. A total of 50 RTS (7 brands; split or mixed leaves, carrot, corn) were collected in 5 national supermarket chains in Porto region (2010). They were tested for aerobic mesophilic counts, coliforms and Escherichia coil counts as well as for the presence of Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. Samples were also plated in different selective media with/without antibiotics before and after enrichment. The E. coil, other coliforms and Enterococcus recovered were characterized for antibiotic resistance profiles and clonality with phenotypic and genetic approaches. A high number of RTS presented poor microbiological quality (86%-aerobic mesophilic counts, 74%-coliforms, 4%-E. coli), despite the absence of screened pathogens. In addition, a high diversity of bacteria (species and clones) and antibiotic resistance backgrounds (phenotypes and genotypes) were observed, mostly with enrichment and antibiotic selective media. E. coli was detected in 13 samples (n = 78; all types and 4 brands; phylogenetic groups A, B1 and D; none STEC) with resistance to tetracycline [72%; tet(A) and/or tet(B)1, streptomycin (58%; aadA and/or strA-strB), sulfamethoxazole (50%; sul1 and/or sul2), trimethoprim (50%; dfrA1 or dfrA12), ampicillin (49%; bla(TEM)), nalidixic acid (36%), ciprofloxacin (5%) or chloramphenicol (3%; catA). E. coli clones, including the widespread group D/ST69, were detected in different samples from the same brand or different brands pointing out to a potential cross-contamination. Other clinically relevant resistance genes were detected in 2 Raoultella terrigena carrying a bla(SHV-2) and 1 Citrobacter freundii isolate with a qnrB9 gene. Among Enterococcus (n = 108; 35 samples; Enterococcus casseliflavus-40, Enterococcus faecalis-20, Enterococcus faecium-18, Enterococcus hirae-9, Enterococcus gallinarum-5, and Enterococcus spp.-16) resistance was detected for tetracyclines [6%; tet(M) and/or tet(L)], erythromycin [3%; ern(B)], nitrofurantoin (1%) or ciprofloxacin (1%). The present study places ready-to-eat salads within the spectrum of ecological niches that may be vehicles for antibiotic resistance bacteria/genes with clinical interest (e.g. E. coli-D-ST69; bla(SHV-2)) and these findings are worthy of attention as their spread to humans by ingestion cannot be dismissed.

Water quality in Lis river, Portugal

    Publicação
In the past 30 years, the Lis river basin has been subjected to constant ecological disasters mainly due to piggery untreated wastewater discharges. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of existing domestic, agricultural, and industrial activities on the water quality, and to propose a watershed plan to protect and manage surface water resources within the Lis river basin. For this purpose, 16 monitoring stations have been strategically selected along the Lis river stretch and its main tributaries to evaluate the water quality in six different sampling periods (2003-2006). All samples were characterized in terms of organic material, nutrients, chlorophyll, and pathogenic bacteria. Generally, the Lis river presents poor water quality, according to environmental quality standards for surface water, principally in terms of dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, and fecal coliform, which can be associated mainly with the contamination source from pig-breeding farms.

A multidisciplinary approach to people living with HIV dropping out from and returning to treatment - results from a HIV Clinic in Portugal

    Publicação
Background: Adherence to HIV care is pivotal for achieving viral suppression, preventing viral transmission, and improving health outcomes. Despite advancements in antiretroviral therapy, many people living with HIV (PLHIV) are disengaged from care, compromising treatment effectiveness. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 81 episodes of care dropout at a Portuguese hospital between 2018 and 2024. A multidisciplinary team (physicians, nurses, social workers, and mental health professionals) implemented a structured program to reengage patients. Demographic, clinical, and socioeconomic data were collected at baseline and after six months. Results: 79% percent of the participants returned to care, with 68% resuming antiretroviral therapy. Although most patients achieved improved viral load suppression after returning, 27% were lost to follow-up after six months. Foreign-born individuals were associated with a lower likelihood of re-engagement. Common barriers include financial hardship, limited social support, and unaddressed mental health needs. Conclusions: A multidisciplinary approach effectively reconnected PLHIV to care and achieved enhanced virological outcomes. However, persistent socioeconomic and psychosocial challenges can lead to repeated disengagement. Long-term, targeted interventions, particularly for vulnerable groups, are required to sustain retention and ensure improved HIV management and overall patient well-being.

Agostinho da Silva: a poetic construction of existence = Agostinho da Silva: uma poética construção da existência

    Publicação
Believing that the construction of existence is poetic and religious so that life fulfils itself and that the Portuguese way of thinking, more conceptional than conceptual, finds in the Thinker of the World to Be one of its clearest and deepest expressions, the reflexion suggested in this paper arises from the intimate relationship between poetry and love, highlighting the brotherly unity of the aesthetical, antropological, ethical and political dimensions when one thinks and lives a project of hope -for man and his common home- spun by the Kingdom of Spirit.

Unlocking the value of food waste: sustainable production of ethylene glycol over low-cost Ni-W catalysts supported on glucose-derived carbons

    Publicação
Food waste is abundant and holds great potential to be converted into valuable chemicals like ethylene glycol (EG), which is a key compound for the production of commodity polymers and other specialty products. Therefore, the direct conversion of food waste could represent a pivotal alternative for the sustainable production of EG. Nickel-tungsten catalysts supported on glucose-derived carbons were synthesized and evaluated for EG direct production from cellulose and cellulosic urban wastes. A remarkable yield of EG of 62% was attained directly from cellulose after 5 h, while the optimized catalyst allowed to reach notable EG yields around 40% from cellulosic wastes. Furthermore, as far as we are concerned, no previous works have reported the conversion of food wastes, such as fruit peels, directly into EG. Therefore, we report the environmentally friendly production of EG from banana peel, orange peel and spent coffee grounds with promising yields of up to 21%. Low-cost Ni-W catalysts supported on glucose-based carbons were efficient for the sustainable ethylene glycol production directly from cellulose and wastes.

All the pups we cannot see: Cannibalism masks perinatal death in laboratory mouse breeding but infanticide is rare

    Publicação
Perinatal mortality is a major issue in laboratory mouse breeding. We compared a counting method using daily checks (DAILY_CHECK) with a method combining daily checks with detailed video analyses to detect cannibalisms (VIDEO_TRACK) for estimating the number of C57BL/6 pups that were born, that died and that were weaned in 193 litters from trios with (TRIOOVERLAP) or without (TRIO-NO_OVERLAP) the presence of another litter. Linear mixed models were used at litter level. To understand whether cannibalism was associated with active killing (infanticide), we analysed VIDEO_TRACK recordings of 109 litters from TRIO-OVERLAP, TRIONO_OVERLAP or SOLO (single dams). We used Kaplan-Meier method and logistic regression at pup level. For DAILY_CHECK, the mean litter size was 35% smaller than for VIDEO_TRACK (p < 0.0001) and the number of dead pups was twice lower (p < 0.0001). The risk of pup loss was higher for TRIO-OVERLAP than TRIO-NO_OVERLAP (p < 0.0001). A high number of pup losses occurred between birth and the first cage check. Analyses of VIDEO_TRACK data indicated that pups were clearly dead at the start of most of the cannibalism events and infanticide was rare. As most pups die and disappear before the first cage check, many breeding facilities are likely to be unaware of their real rates of mouse pup mortality.
