Modelos de Previsão de Qualidade de Vida Através de Sensores Biométricos

    Publication
With the improvement of health care and living conditions, there has been a decrease in mortality, accompanied by an increase in life expectancy of the overall population. This increase is also associated with a rise in chronic illnesses, which can induce a great deal of pain and discomfort. Therefore, it is important to not only focus on the length of a patient's life, but also on its quality. Even though Quality of Life (QoL) is now a crucial measurement in the treatment of patients, the methods to assess it are not as evolved as necessary. There is a lack of continuous evaluation, which is the most effective way of assessing QoL. Stemming from the need to predict and monitor QoL with greater precision, we aim to develop predictive models based on physiological data obtained through biometric sensors, by simulating a wide variety of this data and attributing QoL scores to it, depending on their features, and then training models with the resulting data. This will be done within the scope of the QVida+ research project, which aims to create an information system that will use physiological data from patients to evaluate QoL, and that will adapt continuously to the patient and serve as a decision support system for health care professionals. In order to achieve the best results, several biometric measurements will be analyzed. We will have in account both the precision of their output, but also their practicality for the patient, due to the need for constant wear. A large set of physiological data will be generated, with a great variation, in order to allow for extensive testing and tuning of the predictive models. This data will be labeled in terms of QoL, according to its features. Then, we will compare the possible methods of classification of the data, in order to achieve predictive models that will be precise and generalizable to a larger population, and that will allow a continuous measurement without significant effort required from the patient. Some of the techniques that will be tested in this step are random forests and deep learning. The possibility of assessing QoL continuously can have a significant impact in health care, serving as a support to clinical decision, as it provides a highly important and reliable measurement, benefiting patients and professionals alike.

Realidade Virtual como Abordagem Terapêutica Não Farmacológica para a Depressão na Demência: Uma Revisão Sistemática

    Publication
Objectives: Depression is one of the most frequent behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSDs) and, when untreated, has been associated with a range of negative outcomes. Virtual reality (VR) has been gaining popularity as a non-pharmacological approach to BPSDs. However, the efficacy of VR in dementia-related depression is still uncertain. This review aims to evaluate the effect of VR interventions in the reduction of depression or depressive symptoms in people with dementia (PwD). Methods: A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA 2020 guidelines and the study protocol was registered in PROSPERO. PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched from inception to March 2022 for intervention studies evaluating the effect of VR in depression. For each eligible study, risk of bias was assessed with Cochrane "Risk of Bias" tool (RoB 2.0) and Risk of Bias In Non-randomized Studies of Interventions tool (ROBINS-I). A narrative synthesis was undertaken. Results: Of 617 records identified, six studies fully met the eligibility criteria. These comprise 300 PwD. Two studies were deemed to have "some concerns" risk of bias, and four "high"/"critical" risk. Three studies reported no statistically significant effects of VR compared to the control group or to baseline patient data, and three reported significant positive effects. Conclusions: So far, only weak evidence that VR interventions may benefit depression in PwD is provided. Notwithstanding this, VR holds promise as no increase in depressive symptoms has been reported, so future research should address the methodological limitations and narrow scope of the existing evidence.

Relatos de uma estudante-estagiária rumo à grande aventura da sua vida: a profissionalização docente

    Publication
This internship report was written as part of the "Professional Internship" course, which is part of the syllabus for the second year of the Master's Degree in Teaching Physical Education in Primary and Secondary Education at the Faculty of Sport of the University of Porto. This experience gave me first-hand contact with teaching and allowed me to develop my professional and personal skills. On a professional level, it provided me with various pedagogical tools to put into practice in my future as a Physical Education teacher. On a personal level, it was a process that allowed me to develop my interpersonal skills and bridge the gap between theory and what happens on a daily basis in teaching. This internship allowed me to implement teaching strategies that were different from the conventional ones I experienced as a student, and now as a teacher I have been able to change those paradigms and use them as a source of what not to do in class. I tried to focus my interactions with the students on their active participation in the teaching-learning process. When planning the lessons, they were thought out and structured after getting to know and reflecting on what encouraged the group. Even so and considering the unpredictability that can arise from a group that is not very motivated.

A Casa de Pomares: reconciliação do novo com o original

    Publication
This work is developed around a pre-existing element, with the main goal of transforming the old rural building into a house for temporary accomodations. It is a house well known by the author, situated in Pomares, in Guarda, which state of conservation and functional organization doesn't match with the intended use. The study is divided in three fronts. The first one - Pomares - gathers information about the village where the house is sited, and searches for patterns that can be found in our study object, while deepening the socioeconomic dynamics that culminated in the actual village. On the second one - Narrativa Cronológica - the main subject is the pre-existing house. This front attempts to gather all the existing information about the old building and his main constructive and spacial features, which will help us understand the evolution of the house through time, clarifying its different phases and finding out how did it become the actual building. Reconciliação do novo com o original is the last chapter, where we built a final approach to the required project: the contact with the client, the problems found in the pre-existing element and some architectural references are crossed in the process of searching for the ultimate solution. Finally, the endorsed solutions are described and justified, and the project is presented through objective representations in different scales, testing the adressed subjects discussed throughout the journey.

Matéria e Sustentabilidade na Arquitetura Contemporânea: o betão e a madeira

The current environmental scenario is not at all encouraging. The worsening of global warming is directly related to the accelerated pace of production and industrial systems. The Industrial Revolution, and with it the hyper-artificialization of construction materials, simultaneously originated the synthetic product and demand, among which we can mention steel, concrete and polymers. This new landscape and the new socio-cultural guidelines quickly assimilated the new consumer goods and contributed to the gap between materials and the creative process. This work points out some concepts such as critical regionalism, sustainable design, stereotomy and tectonics in an attempt to provide a new perspective on natural materials and, from them, mitigate the environmental impacts of construction. This, however, understanding that within the current scenario, materials such as concrete are extremely important for the maintenance of most of the systems that keep our society running. It is considered, therefore, the need to explore alternatives that gather favorable qualities so that materials such as reinforced concrete continue to be part of the current constructive dialectic without breaking with the proposal of sustainability. On the other hand, wood has always been a constructive material of excellence, despite being displaced by more "technological" materials, its ecological performance, its belonging to the building tradition and its versatility reinforce its value today. This value is apprehended through the reinvention conquered by this material from technologies that allowed to raise its properties to another level. The present work proposes to explore an analysis system known as life cycle assessment to understand the parameters of sustainability in buildings and some aspects of the ecology of concrete and wood. Relying on projects developed in Portugal, the aim is to demonstrate the aesthetic, constructive and environmental potential of these two materials from a national perspective.

Cardiopulmonary, Metabolic and Perceived Exertion Characteristics Among Portuguese Firefighters

    Publication
Background: Firefighting is a strenuous occupation that requires firefighters to be in excellent physical condition. However, some of these professionals are not sufficiently physically fit for duty, negatively impacting their performance. Objective: To cardiopulmonary characterize Portuguese firefighters at different exercise intensities to clarify if their physical fitness profile is adequate to overcome their occupational activities demands. Methodology: Twenty-four healthy Portuguese firefighters performed an intermittent running protocol (with 1 km·h1 increments and 30 s intervals) on a treadmill. Cardiorespiratory variables and core temperature were measured continuously during the exercise, while blood lactate and rating of perceived exertion were assessed during the rest periods between steps. Results: The increase in velocity along the running protocol resulted in higher values of oxygen uptake (41.5 ± 8.5 mL/min/kg), blood lactate (13.5 ± 4.6 mmol/L) and rating of perceived exertion (19 ± 1). However, there was stabilization of the respiratory quotient and heart rate from heavy to severe intensities. Discussion/Conclusions: Portuguese firefighters have a minimum level of cardiopulmonary fitness to perform their professional duties. However, given the high demands on the cardiopulmonary function of firefighting, it is essential that firefighters participate in regular training programs to maintain and develop cardiopulmonary physical fitness.
